My reflection after the workshop:

All I want to say for the fourth workshop at RMHD is that I’m profoundly grateful. I’m genuinely thankful for the opportunity to meet all those kids during my workshop and provide them a meaningful art experience. I was able to have about 12 kids during this workshop, which is the greatest number of kids I have ever had during all the workshops I have conducted at RMHD. Although I always reminded of myself that the number didn’t matter, I was extremely ecstatic at how many kids were able to attend my workshop this time. Since I had a lot of kids compared to the past workshops, I was able to meet a variety of kids with different backgrounds and different age groups. About eight kids were pre-schoolers with pure joy in art, and about four people were in teenage group with their potential in art. Among those eight kids, Amy was one of them, who was a very memorable and special kid to me. She had attended a total of three workshops of mine including this workshop, and she always had a big smiley face with bright energy that made people around her happy while doing art. The fact that she was smiling so big when she saw me doing the workshop is unforgettable. I ran up to her, and she hugged me so tightly that reminded me of our deep relationship I longed to form. I was so glad at the fact that she still remembered me and looked forward to the workshop I conduct at RMHD. As I look at other kids and Amy, I realized how art can bring peace and joy in their lives regardless of any hard situations they must be going through, including myself. About Amy again, she was especially special to me since I talked with her and bonded with her even without being able to speak English during the workshop I first met her. However, several months had passed, and Amy seemed to improve her English tremendously. She had made new friends at the house, and she was able to have a conversation with me smoothly and joyfully than the last time I saw her. Not only do I love Amy’s pure smile and joy toward art, but I also love her social skill and positive personality that gives energy to people around her. She shares materials and helps her friends during the workshop, and she was eager to make new friends continuously. Then, she whispered to my ear: “Are you my friend?” This really made my heart warm deeply, and I was touched by how a kid can make me this happy, filled with positive energy and joy during the workshop. This side of her, which I want to learn and absorb that positive mind, made this workshop shine more than any time that I had worked at RMHD during this past few months.

Since the art kit google form for feedback is not working well, I decided to run the workshop to have more children’s voices. However, I noticed that I actually want to hear their thoughts through written or spoken form. This sparked me the idea of recording a short interview or giving them a writing prompt to describe their artistic experience during the workshop. Some kids were willing to do it when I told them about a squishy toy gift as a reward, but most of them were reluctant to have a brief interview and a video recording. I’m still considering many different options and how I can make them feel comfortable about speaking out loud, but I hope to make their voices shine more through this documentary idea I currently have.

Artist’s Story:

<Libby>

  • My artwork makes me feel happy and good. :)

  • I love using my pictures for art.

  • If my artwork has superpower, it would be flying with my family.

  • Two words that I think of when I see my artwork are “happy” and “exciting!”
